The Music Department at Castlemaine Secondary College offers an exciting and rigorous course of study through instrumental lessons, ensembles and classroom music. The school offers two streams of instrumental tuition-Specialist Music Instrumental Tuition (for students heading towards VCE Music Performance and working in school based ensembles) and Recreational Music Program (for students interested in learning an instrument without taking on music as a study subject choice).

Castlemaine Secondary College offers music as a stream in Year 7 and Year 8. The Music Stream gives students extra periods in which to develop their understanding of music theory and students play in their Year level orchestra. Many ensembles are offered at CSC including String Orchestra, Concert Band, Acoustic Guitar Ensemble, Strings Busking Group and Walking Band. Other ensembles which are timetabled during class time for 7A, 8A and Year 9 Music are Junior Orchestra and Junior Choir.

The Music Department has a wonderful relationship with the Castlemaine State Festival and for the last 3 festivals has worked in partnership with the Australian National Academy of Music and the Australian Youth Orchestra, resulting in performances at the Town Hall and other venues. This partnership will continue and plans are in place for the 2017 Castlemaine State Festival to feature music students from Castlemaine Secondary College once again.
